consulting biologist with a minimum of 2 to 5 years of experience
to join our southern California Ecosystems Group by operating out
of our Santa Barbara, California office. Biologists with strong
botanical survey, habitat mapping, and vegetation sampling skills
are a plus.We welcome a talented and collaborative team member with
demonstrable experience along the Central Coast and elsewhere. As a
Project-level Biologist with Stantec, you will be relied upon to
support and potentially lead field teams and support technical
documentation efforts for a variety of multi-disciplinary projects
for diverse clientele and business sectors. You will support
program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance
monitoring, surveys, inspections/enforcement, and technical support
services in relation to biological resources. You will also assist
project teams and senior level staff with writing reports, work as
part of a team to develop plans and implement steps to move
projects toward closure in the most cost-effective manner.What You
Will Do for StantecAs a Project Biologist:
- You will provide desktop support (e.g., database searches and
literature review), to the project team during the development,
management, and coordination of the natural environment component
of projects and programs for renewable energy, oil and gas, and
other development projects.
- You will assist with field work such as botanical surveys,
breeding bird surveys, vegetation community assessments and
mapping, vegetation sampling, wetland delineation and
classification, special-status species surveys, and construction
monitoring, including the preparation of parts or all associated
reporting.
- You will provide input to field teams and guide more junior
level staff to effectively and appropriately complete tasks.
- You will assist with the planning and preparation of technical
reports (e.g., biological resources technical reports,
jurisdictional delineation reports, monitoring reports, etc.) or
portions of larger environmental assessments.
- You will assist business development teams to respond to
Requests for Proposals including defining the scope of work,
associated cost and compiling relevant sections of proposal
documents.
- You will maintain an up-to-date knowledge of existing and
emerging regulatory requirements, wildlife and vegetation
assessment methodologies and best practices.
- You will develop a working understanding of Stantec's other
consulting practice areas and actively support cross-selling other
services to existing clients.
- Maintain an 85-90% direct project utilization goal.
- Travel will be required within and outside of southern
California.QualificationsYour Capabilities and CredentialsYou are a
biologist or natural resources management specialist and have a
minimum 2 to 5 years of related experience demonstrating increasing
levels of responsibility in conducting biological resources surveys
and preparing technical reports. Your skills should include:
- Strong background, knowledge, and experience with the flora,
fauna, and vegetative communities of the Central Coast; experience
in other areas of California and elsewhere will be considered a
plus.
- Experience in conducting floristic botanical surveys,
reconnaissance wildlife surveys, and species-specific protocol
surveys; experience/permits with steelhead trout, tidewater goby,
California tiger salamander, California red-legged frog, western
snowy plover, California least tern, least Bell's vireo,
southwestern willow flycatcher, and/or coastal California
gnatcatcher will be considered a plus.
- Proficient in technical writing; experience preparing technical
reports will be considered a plus.
- Experience with regulatory compliance and/or preparing
regulatory permit applications packages will be considered a
plus.
- Possess skills in communications and technical information
exchange with clients, engineers and scientists, government
regulators and agencies, and academia.
- This role requires effective in person, tele/video conference,
and written communication with team members. The Project Level
professional is commonly expected to assist with planning and
documenting such communications.
- Builds and maintains productive professional and personal
networking relationships.
- Drives collaborative efforts within the Business Center and
beyond to deliver consistent, high quality and appropriately scoped
technical work.
- Highly proficient with MS Office suite (e.g., Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Project, Adobe Acrobat, Excel).
- Knowledge and familiarity with field implementation, data
gathering and collection using GPS and GIS tools.
- Experience working in the marine environment will be considered
a plus.
- Possession of a California Scientific Collecting Permit, State
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and or federal Recovery Permit
for special-status species will be considered a plus.
- Wetland delineation training certificate will be considered a
plus.
- Must have ability to travel.
- Must have a valid driver's license and good driving
record.
- A medical physical and/or drug and alcohol screening may be
required for some project assignments.
- 40-Hour HAZWOPER would be a plus.Education and
ExperienceBachelor's degree in biology or related field. Minimum 2
to 5 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of
education (e.g., advanced degree) and experience. Concentration in
botany a plus.Typical office environment working with computers and
remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may
include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.This
